Create a hand full of these critters to help with this activity. We made ours using pompoms, pipe cleaners, googly eyes and glue.
This activity will help transition children from addition to multiplication using a visual aid. Everyone knows spiders have eight legs. How many legs are in the web when there are two spiders? What about three? Show the children that there are eight legs on each spider and there are three spiders. That is eight legs, three times or 8x3 or 8+8+8. Using a visual aid, such as our spiders, will help the children interpret the meaning to the written numbers.
