Fizzy Rocks

Mix water with a few drops of food coloring. The more food coloring you use the brighter your color will be. Then slowly add the water mixture to Baking Soda, just enough to make a pasty dough.

Form clumps or “rocks”, set aside to dry for a few hours.

Pour small amounts of vinegar over the rocks—and watch what happens!

Variation—let children use pipettes to drop the vinegar in by the drop, pour all of the vinegar on the rocks—how long does it take to dissolve totally!

Does it Dissolve?

1. Gather common materials like—coffee grounds, sugar, salt, rice, oats, sprinkles
2. Arrange items in small bowls or containers with a spoon for each (for a group of children put these in the center of the table where all can reach).
3. Give each child a small, clear bowl or deep dish
4. Allow them to choose one material at a time, ask them what they are seeing, adding words and terms as they go (scoop, stir, mix, blend, melt, dissolve, liquefy, disperse, float).
5. Have children dump water and content out, rinse, and start again with a new item. Record the findings on whiteboard, paper, or journal.

6. Around Halloween and Easter, use old/unwanted candy to see what sinks and floats, talking about why?

Cornstarch Goop

Pour 2-3 cups of cornstarch into a shallow pan or tray. Add water slowly to the powder stirring until it is dissolved. Let children stir with their hands or tools. As they work it will thicken. As they lift the tools or their hands it will drip in strings. It can even be rolled into a ball, which “melts” when held in their hand.

Variations—add water-color to the water, add colored ice cubes, or add re-hydrated water beads. Always be aware some children will attempt to put objects in their mouth, when using small objects like beads, jewels, water beads—close supervision is extremely important. Plan for the rest of the centers to be self-sufficient, and close the activity if you are needed elsewhere.

Macaroni "Beads"

Macaroni "beads" are great for lacing projects, counting, sorting, jewelry making. Place 2 cups of macaroni pasta in a quart size Ziplock, squirt in a couple of squirts of Liquid Water Color, seal the bags and shake, shake, shake!

As soon as the pasta is evenly colored, spread out on newspaper to dry (which will be quite soon, it dries fast this way). Some darker colors may need a second go round (especially black!)

You can make several batches of rainbow colors, or specific color schemes (pinks and reds, orange and black, etc). String on lanyard lace, yarn, pipe-cleaners, and ribbon.
